We are ready for our Presidential caucus to be held at 7 pm on Feb 3, 2020. Here are the sites and conveners:
If you vote in Laurens, caucus at the school.
If you vote in Fonda, caucus at Weinzetl's party room.
If you vote in Rolfe, caucus at the Community Center.
If you vote at the Pocahontas fire station on Hwy 4, go up the road a bit and caucus at the county conservation office. You will be sharing space with the people who vote in Palmer--two caucuses meeting at separate tables in the same room.
If you vote at the Courthouse or at the Pocahontas Library, caucus at PAC high school vocal music room.
These caucuses will be called to order by Amber Evans, Carmella Schultes, Jerry Depew, Laura Todd, Chandler Todd, Catherine Edgerton, and Ian Lumsden. The first order of business will be to elect a chairman, so you can still command your caucus if you want to run for the job that night.
We will also select a man and a woman from each precinct to create a new county central committee. These people will have control of the county party.
And most notably we will begin to chose a better President by standing up for our favorite candidate and selecting delegates to a county convention. Stronger candidates get to claim more delegates.
Come on out. Bring your kids. Democracy depends on who shows up!

Amy in Pocahontas
Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar spoke at the Family Table in Pocahontas today. She will be at Kirby's Cafe in Emmetsburg Saturday at 1:30 pm. We now have Amy signs for each of our caucus locations to use in February.

Scholten in Rolfe Nov 7
J.D. Scholten will host a town hall at the Rolfe Community Center Thursday Nov 7 at 7 pm. Everyone is invited. Scholten is on his way to ousting odious Congressman Steve King from office in 2020. This may be your best chance to get to know our next Congressman and tell him about this county.
Update: Scholten met the public--people from Rolfe, Humboldt, Pocahontas, Laurens, Fort Dodge, and more--then Met the Press. Scholten offered a contrast between the incumbent Steve King who has done few town hall meetings in his many years in office and Scholten's own manner of being everywhere around the district all the time.

2020 Caucus chairs needed
We still need volunteers to run the 2020 Presidential caucus in two of our precincts. If you live in either the Bellville precinct or the Pocahontas 2 precinct, you can learn to run your local caucus this fall and preside over it on February 3.
The Bellville voters cast ballots in Palmer. It includes most of southeastern Pocahontas County. Pocahontas 2 voters cast ballots at the Pocahontas Library. That precinct reaches all the way to Gilmore City.
Running the caucus is not hard. Sign people in by finding their names on a list you will get. Count the size of the various groups who support different candidates. Record the names they select to send to the county convention. Elect two people to represent the precinct on the county central committee.
You can have a more elaborate caucus if you wish--plan local campaigning, adopt platform planks, etc--but it is optional.

Our 2018 Election
Thanks to all who voted for the Democratic Party candidates on Pocahontas county ballots in 2018. We supported an excellent slate from Fred Hubbell on down.
Democrats Mike Bollard and Brent Aden won the only two contested races within the county. Bollard defeated a challenger and won another term as county recorder. Aden defeated an incumbent to become a county supervisor. He joins Democrats Ed Dewey and Jeff Ives, thus constituting a majority of the board of supervisors.
More votes were cast this year than four years ago. Most of the new votes went to Democrats. Four years ago the Democrat got 736 votes for Governor here. This year an extra 257 voters appeared. The Democrat got 225 more votes, reaching 961.
Our odious, nationally reviled Congressman saw his vote total slip nine points in Pocahontas County as some voters preferred the excellent J.D. Scholten.
But Republicans won most statewide races and control the legislature completely. Public schools and IPERS will remain under threat. Republicans in other states have tried to pack the courts and gerrymander their legislatures. That could happen here, too.
Nationally the GOP march toward authoritarianism has met a roadblock in the new House of Representatives. We wish them luck and are pleased that our neighbors in SW Iowa and NE Iowa sent new people to Congress to help out.

John O'Brien says a vote for him is a vote for education. Republicans would rather cut taxes than allow schools to even keep up with inflation.
O'Brien also talked at length to the Iowa Corn Growers and wound up wearing a corn sticker badge on his campaign t-shirt.
